CCAwireless is installing wireless
802.11b LANs in
Public libraries to serve two independent needs. Some libraries have
recognized the need for patrons to be able to connect to the Internet
with their own laptop computer using the library high-speed connection.
This gives them the ability to conduct their research by using the
library database and be attached to the Internet from anywhere within
the library's space.
Others have used the wireless LAN's
to provide additional flexibility to provision, move or install new
workstations without installing costly additional Cat5 drops. Other
important uses are to swiftly setup labs without the use of unsightly
hubs and wiring in the conference spaces.
New applications are being developed
to take wireless enabled laptop computers with scanning capabilities
to the book racks. Inventory and book replenishing is accomplished
through the wireless LAN. By bringing these administrative tasks to
these areas, books can be scanned and logged in thru the wireless
network, saving the library an enormous amount of staff time.
